Detectives from the Gang Crime Squad are investigating a dramatic shooting in Altona North, with early signs pointing to possible links with the illicit tobacco trade.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting ongoing concerns about organised crime in the area.
Emergency services were called to Borrack Square at around 11.30pm on Tuesday, 17 March, after reports that a man had been shot outside a café.
According to witnesses, a large crowd had gathered at the location when a silver Toyota Hilux pulled up, and multiple gunshots rang out, sending people fleeing in panic.
A 49-year-old man sustained two gunshot wounds to the arm and was rushed to hospital. Police confirmed his injuries are non-life-threatening, but the targeted nature of the attack has raised serious concerns about the presence of organised crime in the suburb.
Following the shooting, the offenders fled the scene in the same vehicle. Just hours later, around 2.50am, the vehicle was discovered burnt out at the intersection of McArthurs and Chambers Roads.
Police are investigating whether this was an attempt to destroy evidence and are examining potential links to other recent violent incidents in the region.
A crime scene has been established at Borrack Square as investigators continue to gather forensic evidence, review CCTV footage, and speak with witnesses. Detectives are treating the attack as targeted and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
Authorities have warned that the investigation could take time, given the potential ties to organised criminal networks, and stressed the importance of community vigilance.
The shooting has once again raised questions about the reach of the illicit tobacco trade in Victoria and the risks it poses to public safety.
