The Local Media Landscape: City of Wyndham & Werribee
A Booming Audience
The City of Wyndham is one of Australia’s fastest-growing local government areas, making it fertile ground for local media. The estimated resident population as of 30 June 2024 stands at 337,009 — up 4.00% from the previous year, outpacing Greater Melbourne’s growth rate of 2.74%.
Forecasts project the population will reach 501,634 by 2041, meaning the potential audience for local news will continue to grow substantially for decades to come.
Werribee itself — the administrative heart of the City of Wyndham, located 32km south-west of Melbourne’s CBD — recorded a population of 50,027 at the 2021 census, making it the city’s most populous centre. The broader Werribee West statistical area has grown by around 46% since the 2021 Census, with population growth driven primarily by interstate migration.
A Young, Diverse Community
The demographics of Wyndham point to a digitally active, community-focused readership. The area skews younger and more multicultural than the Melbourne average, with large numbers of families settling in new housing estates across suburbs like Tarneit, Truganina, Point Cook, and Wyndham Vale.
This kind of audience tends to be highly engaged with local news — they want to know what’s happening in their immediate area, from school issues to road works to local crime.
The Competitive Media Landscape
The local media environment in Wyndham is relatively sparse for such a large population, which represents an opportunity. Print titles serving the area include the Werribee Star, the Werribee Times, and the Wyndham Weekly/Point Cook Weekly.
The Wyndham Star Weekly, part of the Star News Group, positions itself as a key source of local news and advertising in the area, with a particular focus on real estate and motoring.
Wyndham City Council also publishes its own monthly magazine, Wyndham News, keeping residents updated on council projects and community events.
On the digital side, the Werribee News is a digital-native outlet originally launched to give secondary school students journalism experience, covering Werribee, Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina, and Williams Landing, published by Austech Media.
This means that despite a population of well over 300,000 — larger than many regional cities — the area has limited dedicated local news coverage, particularly in video and digital formats. That gap is precisely where Wyndham TV has positioned itself.
Why This Matters for Wyndham TV
With a population forecast to hit half a million by the early 2040s, a predominantly young and digitally connected demographic, and a relatively thin existing media landscape, Wyndham TV operates in a market with strong structural tailwinds.
Local video news and community-driven digital coverage fills a genuine void — and as the region keeps growing, so does the potential audience for independent local journalism rooted in the community.

About The City of Wyndham
The city of Wyndham is situated in Victoria, Australia, within the outer south-western suburbs of Melbourne and part of the Melbourne Metropolitan Area. Spanning 542 square kilometres (209 sq mi), it lies between Melbourne and the regional city of Geelong.
- History
The Wyndham District gained its initial incorporation as a local government body on 6 October 1862. Subsequent changes in Local Government legislation led to its transformation into the Shire of Wyndham on 7 March 1864, which was later renamed the Shire of Werribee on 15 December 1909.
Initially spanning 715 square kilometres (276 sq mi) and primarily rural in nature, the shire gradually relinquished land to suburban development from metropolitan Melbourne.
On 6 January 1922 and 5 February 1941, the City of Footscray absorbed two land parcels totaling approximately 700 hectares. Then, on 20 February 1957, the Altona Riding of the Shire of Werribee was separated and established as the Shire of Altona, subsequently attaining city status eleven years later.
Following these changes, the boundaries remained relatively unchanged, culminating in the proclamation of Werribee as a City on 20 March 1987.
