Undercover police rammed a car in central Melbourne after it was allegedly seen driving erratically near Southern Cross Station, just outside Victoria Police headquarters.
A 35-year-old man was allegedly driving a Hyundai in a dangerous manner outside the station earlier today, drawing the attention of passers-by and officers in the area.
Witnesses say the vehicle was seen on the tram tracks, prompting police to move in and try to stop the driver before the situation escalated further.
The driver was eventually cornered on Spencer Street, where police boxed the car in as traffic backed up around the confrontation.
But witnesses said the man allegedly made a last-ditch attempt to escape, trying to push through a narrow gap as officers closed in. In the chaos, a police officer was forced to jump out of the way as the Hyundai surged forward, heading straight towards a taxi.
Multiple taxis were caught up in the crash, with one driver trapped in the aftermath as the impact left vehicles jammed together.
Police quickly swarmed the scene and moved to secure the area, surrounding the Hyundai as the driver was ordered to stop.
The man was eventually taken out of the vehicle as officers apprehended him with guns and Tasers drawn.
He was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to hospital under police guard, while the damaged taxis and debris remained on Spencer Street as police managed the scene and began initial inquiries.
