Melbourne has claimed the global spotlight after being crowned the best city in the world for 2026, topping the latest global rankings from Time Out Group in partnership with Intrepid Travel.
The Victorian capital surged to the number-one position ahead of global powerhouses including London, New York City and Tokyo, cementing its reputation as one of the most vibrant and liveable destinations on the planet.
The prestigious ranking draws on insights from more than 24,000 people across 150 cities, alongside votes from over 100 Time Out city experts and analysis from local writers who assess what makes each destination worth visiting right now.

According to Time Out, Melbourne stood out for its electric blend of sport, food, culture and neighbourhood character — a formula that continues to captivate both locals and international visitors.
The city’s globally recognised sporting calendar played a decisive role in securing the top spot.
Signature events such as the Australian Open, the Australian Grand Prix, the AFL Grand Final and the Boxing Day Test continue to draw massive international audiences and reinforce the city’s status as a global sporting capital.
But Melbourne’s appeal stretches far beyond the stadium. Time Out highlighted the city’s dynamic culinary scene, where locals happily queue for cult-favourite burgers one night and celebrate milestone occasions at restaurants that have been serving diners for more than a century.
Equally celebrated is the city’s distinct neighbourhood culture. From independent cinemas and vinyl record stores to rooftop bars and quirky art galleries, Melbourne’s creative pulse runs through its historic streets.
Heritage buildings, mural-covered laneways and expansive riverside gardens along the Yarra River help create a cityscape that blends old-world charm with modern energy.
Major infrastructure has also boosted the city’s appeal. The opening of the Metro Tunnel was cited as a transformative milestone, significantly improving how residents and visitors move through the city.
Survey results show Melburnians themselves remain deeply passionate about their city. Ninety-four percent of locals rated the food scene highly, while 92 percent praised its arts and culture.
Meanwhile, 77% recommended the nightlife, underscoring the city’s reputation for late-night creativity and entertainment.
The ranking also revealed Melbourne’s strong appeal to younger residents, placing it as the third-best city in the world for Generation Z to live in.
Timing also helped the city shine. March alone delivers a packed cultural calendar featuring the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.
Later in the year, the National Gallery of Victoria will host a major exhibition celebrating the legendary French luxury house Cartier.
Spring will also mark a historic sporting moment when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the first regular-season NFL game ever played in Australia.
Rounding out Time Out’s top ten cities for 2026 were Shanghai in second place, followed by Edinburgh, London, New York City, Cape Town, Mexico City, Bangkok, Seoul and Tokyo.
For Melbourne, the recognition is more than just a title — it’s a powerful global endorsement of a city that continues to evolve while fiercely protecting the culture, creativity and community spirit that make it unlike anywhere else in the world.
Melbourne’s previously highest rank was No 2 in 2016, having placed fourth in 2025. Its ultimate rival, Sydney, also made the list at No 21, while Adelaide came in at No 29.
