Woman Found Deceased In Werribee Apartment Building With Toddler Alone

Police were prompted to conduct a welfare check at a Werribee apartment building on Cottrell Street, where a deceased woman was found around 11;40am. A toddler was also found in the apartment and was seen wrapped in a blanket and taken by the police to an awaiting ambulance. It was thought the woman may have been deceased for 8 to 9 days.

A woman was found deceased in her Werribee apartment today leaving behind a toddler. It’s thought the woman has been deceased for approximatly 9 to 10 days. The distressing discovery was made at approximately 11:40am

According to preliminary reports, it is believed that the woman had been deceased for approximately 10 days before her body was discovered.

A young child beleived to be 2 to 3 years old was also found alive in the apartment, presumed to have been in the presence of the deceased during this period. The boy was believed to be his mother.

The heartbreaking turn of events came to light when a concerned neighbor raised the alarm with the building management two days ago however it was initially dismissed highlighting the importance of social wellfare checks.

The neighbor reported a strong odor emanating from the floor where the woman lived and expressed concerns for her well-being. Unfortunately, the complaint was dismissed at the time, and no further action was taken.

Today, the issue was brought to the forefront once again when the staff noticed that the woman had not used her electronic fob key to enter her room for an alarming period of around 10 days. Realising the severity of the situation, the authorities were immediately alerted.

Apartment building resident Paula Adams told the Werribee News, building administration was advised of an odor on level 5 and the cries of a young child were heard coming from the womans room two days prior. “It was reported two days ago, and they’ve only checked it now, I find it’s a bit disheartening,” she said.

Emergency services arrived promptly, and upon gaining entry into the apartment, they discovered the lifeless body of the woman along with the distressed toddler.

The exact cause of her death is yet to be determined, pending further investigations by the police and the coroner’s office and detectives are now working diligently to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

In a ray of hope amidst the tragedy, the young child who was found in the apartment was quickly taken away by ambulance to a local hospital for medical evaluation and care. Early estimates suggest that the child is between 2 to 3 years old.

In a commendable response to the distressing incident, the apartment building owner, Unison Housing, has stepped forward to offer support to traumatised neighbors

The $30 million apartment complex was completed in November 2022 delivering 74 new dwellings for vulnerable and disadvantaged Victorians and to help address the housing affordability crisis.

As part of the investigation into the incident and the surrounding circumstances, it is expected that the security cameras and the woman’s electronic pass will undergo thorough review.

The discovery of the woman several days after neighbors raised concerns emphasises the significance of social welfare checks within the community and underscores the importance of regularly monitoring the well-being of individuals in low income accommodation settings.
