Power Upgrade Sees Ballan Taken Off Supply for One-Day Reliability Blitz

Ballan residents and businesses were left without power for much of Tuesday as Powercor undertook a major upgrade of the town’s electricity network. More than 100 crew members from across Victoria worked to completely re-wire the main street in a single day to improve long-term power reliability.

Residents and businesses across Ballan experienced a full-day power outage last Tuesday as Powercor carried out one of the largest and most complex infrastructure upgrades ever undertaken in the town.

The planned outage, which took place on Tuesday 26 May, was part of a major project to completely re-wire Ballan’s main street network in a single coordinated operation aimed at improving long-term power reliability for the growing community.

More than 100 Powercor crew members and contractors descended on the town before dawn, with workers brought in from four depots across Victoria to complete the extensive upgrade works in just one day.

Power was restored to the township by approximately 3pm.

Powercor said the scale of the operation reflected the importance of the project and the company’s effort to minimise disruption to residents and local businesses.

Rather than scheduling multiple outages across several weeks or months, crews worked intensively to complete the entire reconfiguration in one coordinated shutdown.

The project involved significant rewiring and upgrades to the electricity network servicing Ballan’s main street precinct, requiring crews to isolate large sections of the town’s supply while works were carried out.

Powercor representatives described the operation as one of the biggest jobs the company has ever completed in a regional township.

Heavy vehicles, elevated work platforms, traffic management crews and specialist electrical teams lined Ballan’s streets throughout the day as workers replaced and upgraded critical infrastructure.

While the outage created temporary inconvenience for households and traders, the company said the long-term outcome would be a stronger and more reliable electricity network capable of supporting future demand and reducing the likelihood of unplanned outages.

The works form part of broader investment into regional electricity infrastructure as population growth and increasing energy demand place greater pressure on ageing networks across Victoria.

Locals were notified ahead of the outage, with Powercor encouraging residents to prepare for the interruption by charging devices, planning around business impacts and taking precautions for temperature-sensitive goods and medical equipment.

By mid-afternoon, crews had successfully completed the works and restored supply across the township.

Powercor thanked the Ballan community for its patience and cooperation during the large-scale operation, saying the upgrade would deliver long-term benefits for the town’s electricity reliability and resilience.
