In a landmark appointment reflecting both experience and evolution, Scouts Victoria has invested Daniella Taglieri OAM as Chief Commissioner over the weekend, becoming the first woman to lead the organisation in its Victorian history.
The appointment marks a significant leadership moment for one of Victoria’s largest youth movements and recognises a leader whose career has been built on decades of service, capability and commitment to young people and volunteers.
While historic, Daniella’s investiture is grounded in merit. Her appointment reflects extensive experience across Scouting, education and large-scale volunteer leadership at a time when strong, values-driven leadership in youth organisations is increasingly important.
A lifelong Scout and Queen’s Scout Award recipient, Daniella has served Scouting at every level, including Deputy Chief Commissioner, Assistant Chief Commissioner, Rover Advisor and Joey Scout Leader.
This breadth of experience gives her a deep, practical understanding of the Movement — from grassroots volunteering to statewide leadership.
Leadership Shaped By Doing
Daniella’s leadership comes from years of being involved at every level of Scouting, not just from senior roles. She has spent countless hours in halls, at camps and at events, working alongside volunteers and young people and dealing with the same challenges they face.
She is known for being present, turning up, listening, and helping to find practical ways forward. Whether supporting Leaders, working through complex issues, or guiding major programs and reforms, her decisions are shaped by a clear understanding of what Scouting looks like on the ground.
This hands-on experience has informed her work at state level, particularly her focus on child safety, volunteer support and governance that works in practice, not just on paper.
As Chief Commissioner, she brings a leadership style grounded in experience, accountability and a genuine respect for the people who make Scouting happen.
Beyond Scouting, Daniella has spent more than 15 years in education, including senior leadership roles with a strong focus on learning, wellbeing and youth development.
In 2022, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to youth through Scouting and to education.
Speaking following the investiture, Daniella said her focus was firmly on the future of Scouting in Victoria.
“Scouting is at its strongest when young people are empowered, volunteers are supported, and communities feel connected,” said Taglieri
“I am proud to lead an organisation with such a strong foundation of values, and I am committed to ensuring Scouting continues to be relevant, inclusive and adventurous for the next generation.” she said.
Scouting in Victoria has welcomed girls and young women for more than 50 years, with female members represented across all sections and leadership levels.
Daniella’s investiture reflects the natural progression of that journey, where leadership opportunities are earned through experience, service and capability.
Chair of Scouts Victoria Branch Executive Committee, Jon Willis OAM, said Daniella’s appointment was based on demonstrated leadership and vision.
“Daniella was appointed Chief Commissioner because she is the right leader for Scouting in Victoria. Her depth of experience, integrity and commitment to young people make her exceptionally well placed to guide Scouts Victoria forward.” said Willis
As Chief Commissioner, Daniella will lead Scouts Victoria in supporting over 20,000 youth members and volunteers across metropolitan and regional communities.
Her priorities include youth-led decision making, volunteer support, growth, child safety, and ensuring Scouting remains accessible, inclusive, fun and impactful for communities across Victoria.
The investiture formally marks the commencement of Daniella Taglieri OAM’s term as Chief Commissioner and the beginning of a new chapter for Scouting in Victoria.
