One hundred Wyndham residents became citizens during an Australia Day ceremony conducted on Wednesday, January 26.

The Wyndham council event involved community members from 22 different countries.

Those who became Australian citizens on the day included the Singh family, consisting of father Kamaljit and children Gurleen, Gurnoor, Gavin, Karam and Yuvraj.

Mr Singh, who originally hails from India, said his children were aged between 13 and seven years old.

They were all born in Australia.

Mr Singh said he came to Australia 14 years ago, with a desire to give his children “a better future”.

“We were proud to have our citizenship ceremony on 26 January, we were really blessed to have it on Australia Day,” he said.

“I’m really thankful to the Australian community and the community services who help us on our good days and bad days, and also Wyndham council.”

After the citizenship ceremony, Mr Singh and his family had some photos taken and went out for a meal at an Indian restaurant to celebrate.

Mr Singh said he loved living in Wyndham, not far from Presidents Park.

“There are so many activities to do in Wyndham, the parks are all so big here, we live next to the creek and I take my dog for a walk along the creek and it’s beautiful,” he said.

“There are so many activities for the children to do and we are also close to beaches.”

More than 40 per cent of Wyndham’s population was born overseas, with residents coming from more than 162 different countries.
