In a move that is good for mouths and the local Werribee environment, Bupa Dental Werribee will be moving away using plastics across a range common dental care products such as cups, tray covers, syringe sleeves, headrest covers, barrier film and X-Ray sensor sleeves.
With dentists utilising an average of 20 grams of disposable plastic per patient,1the shift towards biodegradable products at Bupa Dental Werribee will take kilograms of waste out of landfill each year.
Plastic waste can take more than 400 years to decompose while the manufacturing of plastic products release toxins which are dangerous for the environment and people’s health.
Tammy Goodwin, Practice Manager at Bupa Dental Werribee, said this initiative was developed understanding the undeniable link between the planet health and people’s health.
“It’s so important to recognise our impact on the environment as a dental practise, so we are extremely proud to be gradually making the switch and using biodegradable products where possible.
“We hope to continue to incorporate more biodegradable products as they become available and work on our environmental impact however we can,” said Tammy.
Last year, Bupa Dental Werribee rolled out the Everyday Dental Recycling Program, which enabled patients and local communities to drop off everyday oral health items such as empty toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, floss containers and mouthwash bottles and give them a new life after being melted and remoulded into new recycled products.
“By piloting new sustainable initiatives, we’re empowering our people and our patients to think more deeply about their environmental impact,” Tammy said.
